Golden Turmeric Rice

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, rinse the rice thoroughly under cold water and drain.
  2. In the same saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the ground turmeric and ground cumin to the oil. Stir and cook for about 1 minute to toast the spices and release their flavors.
  4. Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan and stir to coat the rice with the turmeric and cumin mixture.
  5. Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add the salt. Give it a good stir.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid.
  7. Simmer for about 15-18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed. Avoid lifting the lid while cooking.
  8. Once the rice is cooked, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and become fluffy.
  9. Fluff the rice with a fork and transfer it to a serving dish.
  10. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro or parsley, if desired.
  11. Serve the golden turmeric rice as a flavorful and vibrant side dish alongside your favorite main course.

Tips:

  • You can add a pinch of ground black pepper along with the turmeric to enhance its absorption.
  • Customize the recipe by adding sautéed vegetables or nuts for extra flavor and texture.
